lyrics

My head was cannon-shot. And on the battlefield my enemies breathed a sigh of relief when it left my shoulders. It fell to the ground with a dull thud- like a moldy apple fallen from its tree. And when the battle was over, they made a trophy of it- gruesome though it was, and tossed my body in a pit with the rest of the fallen.

That should have been my end, but it was not. . I lay in communion with the earth. I heard the rustle of grass in the wind, the creak of old trees, and water rushing under an old covered bridge. All this and more- much more- hundreds of times more as the earth unfolded sound upon sound of teeming life. But inside this cacophony there was a single sound- soft at first, but more potent than the rest. A footfall. Then another. Though soft at first they drew closer and closer, and the closer she stepped, the louder it became until each step reverberated around me and through me as though my heart still beat in my chest. Had I still eyes to see I would have wept at her approach.

She called my name, and as my name left her lips I could hear the broker song her heart sang, and I quailed in terror. In that moment I knew the depth of her grief. I felt it sink into the ground- touching even the deepest bones of the earth. And the earth responded. That same power that sustained my senses answered her call, and I knew it for what it was. It rushed into my veins with the chill of ice water and I felt strong. Stronger than ever before. Strong enough to push open the gateway to hell and walk out back upon the land. But this power that now infused me had a purpose. And though it would open the gate, that same hellish portal would remain open until the earth was new baptized in the screams and blood of men. In a far off land my head gibbered madly, for though I fought against this new tide of power, I could not resist it, and the soul of the man I was drowned in that unholy current. Yet even soulless I knew her.

She called my name again and I responded. My bones creaked and sinews loosed themselves from the grip of rigor mortis. My body rose, and with arms infused with power I thrust open the gate onto the living world. When she saw me, headless, horrifying, she froze. And her mind- stretched already to breaking- snapped under the weights of fear and grief, leaving only the memory of love for her dead horseman.

Chorus:
Chant: Vita Salus Moruus Anima

Sung:
Empty Life without you
Come to me again.
Rise up from the ashes
Live for me again.

Waltz:

Kiss me sweetly, hold me forever // I am no longer the man that I was
Hold me closer, loving together // I am no longer the man that you loved
Kiss me sweetly, hold me forever // I am no longer the man that I was
Touch me tenderly, loving me still // I am Death. Death. Death.

Spoken:
And then I stepped forward
And ripped her head from her shoulders
And when her body fell, the earth lapped hungrily at the stump of her neck.

Outro:
Tonight I ride- grotesque and immortal. And heads fall ripe upon the ground until the price is met for my unholy existence
